* Do you know what a Smurf DDoS attack is?

Suggested article: What is a Smurf DDoS attack?

The Smurf Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is protocol-based. Its goal is to shut down computer networks so their resources are not available to legitimate clients.

Smurf DDoS is a type of DDoS attack that uses the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP). Many ping data packets with a forged IP address of the target are sent to single or multiple computers via it. As a result, the servers will receive responses from those computers. Because of the increased traffic, this server's resources will be depleted faster than usual. The target will then be deactivated, and not being available represents a financial loss for your company.

There are two common types of DDoS Smurf attacks:

  1. Basic DDoS Smurf attack - It works by flooding a network with ping packets containing a faked IP address for the victim.
  2. Advanced DDoS Smurf attack - It can spoof the IP addresses of packets so that the response can be sent to several targets.

To be more secure against Smurf attacks, use a DDoS protection service, disable ICMP traffic, and block packets with a broadcast IP address.

A Smurf attack belongs to the most dangerous category of threats - DDoS attacks. We suggest you check out the following page, if you're interested in learning more about Smurf DDoS attacks.
